Larry had said one of the reasons for having the 4’s race late in the day was we could expect to have some wind to deal with at some point. We were blessed (or cursed) by the wind gods yesterday.
I did my warmup at home on the trainer. It had been raining off and on most of the day so I figured I would stay dry as long as possible. Probably not ideal but it worked to some degree.
When I pulled in I had to ask if we were still racing. Only a few cars in the lot. Saw the P123’s blow past then nothing. Someone went down so they called the race. There were only 14 of us hardy souls (nut jobs) registered and I think only 11 or 12 of us actually rolled out.
So the whistle blows and our emaciated pack moves out. 3 or 4 Roaring Mouse guys, 2 dudes from AV, 2 more from Luzvimin and the rest of us were singles. The mouse boys had a plan from the get go. On the second lap three of them take off. I grabbed a wheel and hung on. We basically split our meager field. After that I don’t really know who went where. All I know is one of the RM guys and I were working together to get up to the front group. Problem was we were towing 2 others along for the ride so our progress was slow. We worked well together trading pulls and trying to take the fastest safest route through the turns. Towards the end we lose two so it’s just RM guy and me. He decides he wants to bridge up to the front so I let him go. He didn’t get there but have to applaud his effort. I finished pretty much smack dab in the middle. My goal for this race was a good workout and I got that and more. Really good practice in the wind. You can really tell who works on pacelines and who doesn’t.
Nice to see Thomas, Bryan, Erik, and Alex out there braving the elements. They had the rain and wind. The 4’s only had to contend with wet roads and wind. All told it was good fun. It was more of a drag cleaning my bike later. Hopefully we can work on some pacelines and eschelons in some of the Thursday night sessions.
