7/25/2015 – Two Race Team Members Climb Haleakala (Maui, Hawaii)

Race Team members Patricia Vo and Brian (Patricia’s son) climbed Haleakala on July 25, 2015. Haleakala, or “House of the Sun”, is a shield volcano that climbs 10,023 feet (3,055 m) high. At the summit, a massive depression can be viewed that spans 2 miles wide and 800 m deep. An annual race, “Cycle to the Sun”, occurs on Haleakala. Team members West Kurihara and Phill Mai participated in the 2015 Cycle to the Sun, inspiring members Patricia and Brian to climb the massive Haleakala crater. Patricia reflects on her ride below.

After consulting with West Kurihara, a teammate who recently raced “Cycle to the Sun”, I decided to climb Haleakala while on my Maui trip. West advised to start early, take time to climb, and prepare for the high altitude and he also added “Yes you can do it”. I told Brian, my son, to be strong physically and mentally. I also told him that if anyone asks if he has accomplished anything, this would be it. Climbing Haleakala at 15 with Mom! If we had better waterproof clothes from head to toe, the climb would be much easier. I was cold at 7000 feet while the thick clouds rained which gave poor visibility. As I started my descent, I saw the most incredible view of Haleakala’s crater. Anyone can accomplish this if you come prepared.
